Periodontics deals with supporting the structures of the teeth, and associated diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes:
- gingiva (gums)
- alveolar bone
- cementum
- periodontal ligament
Periodontists are highly trained dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases and conditions of the periodontium. They are experts in the management of patients with periodontal diseases including all forms of related symptoms which include:
- include bleeding gums
- persistent bad breath
- loose or separating teeth
- a change in the way teeth fit together
- gums that pull away from the teeth
